Healthcare for International Students
One of the many advantages of studying in France is access to high-quality, affordable healthcare. Unlike in many countries where medical expenses can be a significant burden, France offers a public health system that helps international students stay healthy without breaking the bank.
All international students staying in France for more than three months are required to register with the French Social Security system. This coverage is free of charge, there’s no monthly fee for basic health insurance for non-EU students studying in France. Once registered, students are reimbursed for a large portion, often up to 70% or more, of most medical expenses, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescriptions.
In many cases, the amount students pay when visiting a doctor is minimal, and sometimes there’s nothing to pay at all depending on the treatment and the coverage. To further reduce out-of-pocket costs, students can also choose to purchase a complementary health insurance plan (called a mutuelle) for a modest monthly fee, which can cover the remaining balance.
Compared to countries where healthcare is privatized or extremely expensive, France provides a system that ensures students can focus on their studies and enjoy their time abroad with peace of mind. Access to affordable, quality healthcare is just one more reason why France is a top destination for international education.
